Paddleboarding in paradise
By Morgan
Sharks-scares don't bother Emily! Two years ago, she went paddleboarding off the coast of Florida with her parents and younger sister.
Paddleboarding is a sport where the participant either lays on their stomach, sits, or stands on a surfboard and traditionally uses oars to paddle, although some people prefer to use their hands.
Despite an increasing number of sightings of sharks around the south-east coast in recent years, the Smith family packed up their bags and set out to brave the elements.
“The waves were pretty rough,” Emily recalled, also remembering that the weather was muggy that day. She also mentioned that the experience brought back memories of fishing with her dad.
“I loved seeing all the fish in the water, and all the boats.” When asked what her favorite part of the trip was, she grinned, admitting that falling off the board was actually her favorite aspect. She added that she has had experience tumbling, so she was pretty flexible and was unharmed.
After a long day on the waves, they were all exhausted, but still found time for a quick ziplining trip, winding down with a nice dinner.
Among her other talents, which include playing the flute and guitar, Emily has taken up paddleboarding as a hobby. She paddleboards at Ijams Nature Center fairly often, and is not afraid to admit that she loves the activity!
When asked if she is thinking about paddleboarding professionally, she dismissed the idea, stating that she wants to go into medicine and “loves helping people.” One of the things she does to help out is participate in “Meals on Wheels,” a charity that provides meals for people in need.
She concludes that paddleboarding is just a hobby-even if one she takes very seriously!
